Melanie Stansbury’s campaign to keep New Mexico’s First Congressional District (CD1) blue is in full swing on the West Side. She is running for the seat formerly held by (now) Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. The election is June 1.
The campaign has two field organizers working the west side. The West Side Democrats (WSD) are playing a major role in assisting them.
• We are sponsoring the West Side literature drop-off point, located at Sue Wolinsky’s home near the Richard Pino Post Office. Contact her for details. suemwolinsky@gmail.com
• We are providing training and networking events to help precinct and ward chairs to organize and get out the vote.
• Active WSD members are hosting West Side phonebanks. See below for details.

FIELD ORGANIZERS
The campaign’s two West Side field organizers are Marsella Duarte and Shelby Weisburg. They are planning phonebanks, lit drops (and possibly canvassing, if sufficient safety protocols are developed). They are helping organize the May 1 Campaign Rally (see separate article in this newsletter).
They are also working with the WSD in the areas mentioned above. They recommend that volunteers in their wards contact them, instead of the campaign office, to quickly learn about close-to-home volunteering.
Marsella Duarte is a native West Sider working with these wards:
• Wards 23 B and C
• Wards 29 A, B and C
• Wards 68 A, B and C.
She graduated from St. Pius and NMSU (sociology). She managed her father’s private criminal law practice for 10 years. She is the consummate volunteer. She worked in the state house supporting the House Labor, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee in the 2021 general session. Prior to that, she supported the House Appropriations and Finance Committee.
