Message From The Chair
By Flora Lucero
On the eve of New Mexico’s Primary Election, I honor the Democratic candidates who have stepped up to run for elected office. Thank you for working to earn the support of your communities. As Democrats, I trust that you wish to serve and represent your communities’ interests, and I will do my best to support you in that endeavor. And to all Bernalillo Democrats, today we cross the threshold from Primary to General Election. With that turning point, we must resolve that we will galvanize our collective force to claim victory in November. We will do that, not with a message from the top, but with a message that comes from within.
Over the last week we have watched and maybe participated in the outpouring of grief and anger from communities of color as once again, the face of racial injustice snarled at us as if to say, “we will always maintain our power.” But that is not the voice of the many; that is the voice of the few. The voice of the many, our voice, resonates with anger at injustice. Our voice grieves over venomous systemic racism and its writhing presence in our society. Our voice wants more than what was, more than what is, and more than we can imagine under the current norms. Our voice rises to meet injustice with righteous anger and our voice calls for righteous action.
The turning point is now. The day for beginning our march toward a decisive change is today. As people invested in shifting our democracy, we must harness our energy and use it to fight in the electoral arena. Today we shift to face November 3 with a firm resolve. We, the people, are ready.
We are building the bridge to an inclusive representative democracy while crossing it.
Yours in Democracy,
Flora Lucero, DPBC Chair
